So, I faced the coffee pot towards Denver. No one at Melitta told me that (I contacted them twice). (UPDATE: I called customer service and they said that the coffee pot must be facing Colorado for the weather radio to work and it won't work if you are in a valley or around a bunch of hills. It's a shame because this is potentially the best coffee maker on the market--too bad the company is ruining it.
Here's the kicker: The basket on the new model is EXACTLY the same as the old, so I simply could have ordered a basket based on the new model to replace my old one. As for coffee making, the new model's design is functional (continued from the earlier model)--simple and elegant. Hm, did they really need to stick me for another $90. In addition, Melitta should have skipped the fancy electronics. I couldn't find a basket to replace mine with a torn screen. Since the grinder is in the basket, it is very easy to clean; doesn't get mucked up like Cuisinart. It's cumbursome to turn the mill off when you happen to have pre-ground coffee; the weather radio doesn't connect even though I'm in an area of strong signal, and the really bad news is that the weather radio connects through MSNDirect whose website says its discontinuing transmission of weather info in 2012. Nothing).
It's left a bitter taste in my mouth (pardon the pun). I recently purchased ths ME1MSB because Melitta said the earlier model, MEMB1, was discontinued along with its parts. It makes consistently good coffee.However, for the new model: First, it's too big and bulky. Do NOT BUY THIS POT if you want to use the clock or weather radio.
This is my first product review and if this coffee maker were not a piece of junk I'd probably never write one. But stay clear this is a disaster of a product. I live in an area that supposedly gets signal but all it does is flash with a searching for signal error. no luck. Plus you can't set the coffee pot to warm coffee that has already brewed. OK Mine has the same button sticking issue as all the other. Let's say you want to keep the morning coffee warm. Plus while it flashes I cannot set coffee to brew.
In my experience they will not answer your emails, but they may answer the phone. Since they have Amazon backing them up the credit card companies will roll over and not accept your proof of deliver leaving you with no items, but with the charge still on your credit card.You have been warned. I cannot speak to the quality of this product as I never used the one given to me as a gift, but whatever you do, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS (or anything else) FROM ORANGEONIONS. If you finally do get an RMA number they will claim they never received the product leaving you to contest the charge.
I did not want 2 seperate items of lesser value :( I am really dissapointed. After complaining they did agree to send me a seperate grinder. I purchased this machine in 12/2008. They are only able to replace the coffee maker with a regular non grinding machine of much less value. I called Melitta for repair or replacement. The only way you can receive warranty/replacement is if the retailer you purchased it from still has them in stock. I went to the Militta website to inquire about product service. Otherwise, with a sales receipt, Applica will supply you with both a Black and Decker coffee maker and grinder. It has been a great appliance till now. This sucks, as I totally love this coffee maker. To my dismay, I learned that this coffe maker is no longer manufactured, and ironically enough, it was manufactured by Fox International, not Melitta.
News Flash - Black and Decker is not comparable in any way. I purchased this fab coffee maker in July 08, it is now Feb 09. It stopped brewing Superbowl weekend. Your out over $100.
